How to Protect Young Fruit Trees From Bambi?

Hello & thanks in advance for the suggestions.

The wife and I have been planning to plant some fruit trees (apple, plum, pear, and whatever else will grow) in the area directly behind our house.

We have the joy of having a few dear on the property. They aren't usually much of a problem for us, except when my wife decided to grow corn. I am worried that they will look at our little furit trees the way as convienient tasty morsels. I'd hate to have to fence in an acre or so.

Does any body have any suggestions or advice? Should I be concerned? What works?

Best build a BAMBI fence.

Deodorant soap like Zest. Hang from the tree and just tear off one end.

We made hoops out of 4 foot tall fencing. (Field fence, garden fence, a little of both). Each hoop is about 5 feet across, (so the deer have to lean over to get at the branches) and there is one around most of the trees. Our deer problems have stopped. They walk around the area now instead of walking through. I think the idea of going in amid all those hoops scares them because they think they might be trapped. Even the trees that aren't protected are left alone.

You might also try hanging some old CD's. I've been told the light flashing from them is supposed to scare off critters. AOL Cd's work well and seem to be plentiful. [img]/forums/images/icons/grin.gif[/img]

Well, I tried them in the skeet thrower and they're just not heavy enough to fly right, figured there had to be some use for them. Come fall, I'll see if I can cut some up and make shiny christmas ornaments. [img]/forums/images/icons/wink.gif[/img]

If you glue together a stack of AOL CD so that they are about 3/4 of an inch think you should be able to get them to "throw" properly in your trap/skeet launcher.

Tried a High power rifle?

The local apple orchard goes to the local barber shop and collects a few piles of human hair, which it hangs from the trees. Seems to work well for a month or two.

Wolves will also work well.

Only sure protection is a Bambi proof fence.

We have enclosed individual trees in page wire 8 feet tall. The height was decided by the height of the page wire which was 4 feet tall.
