How old have your kids been when they got their own pets? We are thinking of getting our youngest her very own pet but not sure about the age and the responsibility that is going to come along with it. :rolleyes:

It depends on the pet and how much there is to do to take care of the pet. We have always had a cat and a dog. They are the family pets. My daughter knows how to take care of them both and she does a good job. She had fish and hermit crabs when she was younger. They are all dead now!
I got my two older girls a hamster when they were 8 and 10. I still had to help them but they did the majority of it, not that there is much to do. That is a good starter pet, the only thing is they don't live as long as cats and dogs.
