If your broke just remove the anode and cut it off and replace the plug. I have done that a time or 2.

The anodes in your hot water tank took a dislike to it's new water. Typical with a watersoftener installitaion. I have to remove the anodes in a house I have for rent.

I agree with the anode. A house I have just had a new well drilled and about a week later the hot water began to stink to high heaven. Removed the anode and gone.
