You're doing what I am on the verge of doing. Congrats! I will be watching your progress with unnatural interest because I like to learn from other people's mistakes... /forums/images/icons/wink.gif ...

Re: Never farmed, want to farm, am buying. Advice?

It wasn't the one. Between the first time I saw it and the second, the neighbor had a survey done-- and the property we were looking at got a lot smaller, by magic. Ouch.

    The search continues....
  3. Need basic info on Buying/leasing propoane tanks

    Hi,

Might be buying a farm this weekend. The house needs a new LP tank, as the old one was sold at auction.

Should I buy or lease? How much does one of those things cost? Where should it be...

Re: Never farmed, want to farm, am buying. Advice?

    Hey,

After months of looking I may have found "the one". Going out tomorrow with the family. I saw it Thursday.

The house needs some help, but is basically sound. It has a creek and pond, the...

Re: Never farmed, want to farm, am buying. Advice?

I agree. I'm still looking for a place. One thing I notice the same between city and country is -real estate agents-. Difficult to deal with! Grr.......

    I'll keep y'all posted on when/where I get...
  6. Re: Anybody have experience with Straw Bale houses?

Well, I read a 300 page book on the topic. I won't be building with bales. The ease and inexpensiveness that originally attracted me to the idea just aren't there if you don't live in a desert... it...
  7. Anybody have experience with Straw Bale houses?

I was wondering if anybody had put one up, or lived in one.

    Re: Best place to Live?

Haha, eroding mountains away by accident in a computer model is nothing. I knew a guy who was modelling prairie biology. He got one of his constants wrong and, in a simulated 5 year period, covered...
  9. Re: Need info on geothermal heat pumps... PV\'s via

Don't -have- to, but there's a conversion loss I wouldn't want to incur. Waste not, want not.
  10. Need info on geothermal heat pumps... PV\'s viable?

    Hey,

I'm designing the house that will go on my land.

I want to be off the grid if I can manage it.

I am very intrigued by ground source heat pumps. These things run a big coil of...

IIRC, the Chaos model came out just about the time I was finishing up my minor in Environmental Systems modelling at the UW Madison. I read a couple of books on it and came to class, and asked my...

Pat, I'm tracking right with you.

And I'll kill a varmint if it's eating my crops. One of the things on my shopping list is a new shotgun. BoomBoom.

I was down in Harmony, Minnesota, walking...

    Pat:

For an exposition of the theory, with weather as a prime point of discussion, see 'Chaos: Making a New Science' by James Gleick. Very readable.

    Re: Best place to Live?

I try to reduce my energy consumption by 10% a year. Not too hard... for the first 5 years in a house. I made it this year. Year 6 usually gets harder.

The technology gets cheaper and cheaper....

40 tons of free carbon a second are being released into the atmosphere. Up until the very recent past, this was never the case in the history of the planet.

    Re: Best place to Live?

The mechanism that is causing it is well understood: the intoduction of a lot of excess carbon in the atmosphere. You can test the mechanism in your own home.

Take 2 glass enclosures. In one, put...

    Re: Best place to Live?

It's pointless to argue. One of us is right and the other wrong.
Our great-grandchildren will know for sure. I hope for their sake I am wrong, because nobody's going to do a thing about it anyway.

I hate tornados. I've always been fortunate enough to live in houses that have basements, and we and the kids religiously go there to the Southwest corner when the sirens blow. Wisconsin and...
