    Get a soil sample done first. If you have this wonderful black gumbo junk they call dirt, you will be compounding the problem. Most of the black gumbo is already alkaline. The best way to break it up...

    Growing up on a dairy farm we used to bucket train all our calves. Starting on the second day of age we used the finger method as someone else explained. Most were trained within 2-3 days.

    It wouldn't hurt to do a soil test first. Ashes contain high amounts of potash ie potassium. Sent my levels off the scale when a test was done. I imagine it would depend on amount burned also.

    I have had good luck going into winter with a higher cut. Have been told it helps shade out early weeds and from my experience it seems to help.

    Once established it requires very low water and takes care of itself. Just mow it and go.

    Paid $1200. for mine and best money I ever spent. If you watch the paper some good used ones can be found for a good price. If you have a Dixon dealer in the area most will let you test drive them....
