They are called tip and ring. Ring has -48v dc at all times and 120vac during ringing. Tip will always have a ground. As someone mentioned, you only need two wires, check them with a volt/ohm meter...

I think I might be in trouble, I ran 12/3 to the base board and also ran thermostat wire to the baseboard. Now I'm reading that I should have run 12/3 to the thermostat then 12/3 to the baseboard...
