all you do if just stab the hosta with a shovel and break apart. the size of each piece depends on you and what you what. I wouldn't make the pieces to small because you'll have to wait a long time...

dig up the whole hosta, take a shovel and just cut the plant into any size pieces you want by just using the shovel. replant the pieces and water until established. Hostas are real hard to kill....
