I have a '95 GMC Sierra pickup and the tailgate latch is starting to hang up a little. It doesn't always extend fully when the gate is closed and sometimes gets stuck in the open position and won't latch when I close the tailgate.
What is the best way to get at the latch to clean and lubricate it?
The only way I know is to take the tailgate apart and work on it,i had the same problem with my 93 Chevy.

I've always used white lithium grease to lubricate latches, hinges, striking plates etc on vehicles.
I do not know what or how exactly his tailgate is ...but mind had the linkage froze up on the inside of the tailgate. [img]/forums/images/icons/mad.gif[/img] A real pain....
Yeah, the WLG is not real great at freeing things up, but it does provide good long-term lube for striking/engaging metal latches and vehicle-type hinges. It comes in a spray can now, but it's too thin, and all I've ever been able to do with that is make a mess [img]/forums/images/icons/crazy.gif[/img] I prefer the tube.
I got 2 Sierra's, 94 and 98. The 98 tailgate latch gets stuck and will not open sometimes, my wife really hates it. I have to get a big screwdriver and open it that way. I guess the latch is loose or something. How do I get inside?
I had been greasing the strike plates and latch, but it wasn't doing the trick. I squirted some WD40 on the center pivot today and it worked OK. What was real nice is that I didn't have to take anything apart, I just squirted it in underneath the handle.
