Clearing a Fence Line

I'd like to know what you would do to clear brush/grass out from around an existing barbed wire fence. I guess we could use a weed-eater, but are there any other options such as Round-up, etc that are available in 1 or 5 gal containers?

The brush is not too high - 12" or so and is composed of an assortment of coastal grass, some vines, and assorted junk.
We can run the mower up to the fence, but it would sure be nice to be able to clean along the fence line too.

Thanks

Nick,

I guess it depends on how much manual labor you want to put into cleaning the fencerow and how nice you want it to look. I would just spray it with weed killer and after the weeds and grass have died back try to keep it maintained with a string trimmer.

I would spray Round-Up along the line first, and then after the grass/weeds die, if you want to trim it, the dried remains will be easier to cut down with a weed-eater.

If you are going to use Round-Up, I would suggest buying the large concentrate and making your own mixture. You can get yourself a 2 gallon sprayer at Home Depot for under $20. Buying the pre-made stuff is just way too expensive.

Thanks to both of you - sounds like spraying then following with a trimmer is the way to go.

What is a good source to buy the weed killer concentrate? I fully agree that there's no need to buy the stuff pre-mixed.

I bought a 1-gallon bottle of Super Concentrate at Home Depot. I think I paid about $90 for it -- makes 85 gallons of mix. I however always mixed 2.0 ounces per gallon which gets me about 64 gallons.

There is a gallon size 50% concentrated Roundup on ebay for $56. Also commercial sites here's one that sells by the drum or 4 1 gal containers..

Thanks again - if it ever stops raining I'll be able to get out there and get busy.

Judging from the weather we have had the past few days it looks like you may need a boat to get out there to work on your fence line! Looks like the rain may end by the middle of next week.

Lots of critters live along those fence lines like those waskley wabbits.
