When to walnut and hickory trees produce nuts?

What time of year can I expect to find walnuts and hickory nuts? I thought it was in the fall, but I looked around under some walnut and hickory trees and didn't find a thing. If squirrels already got them, it seems like I'd at least find the shells.

Re: When do walnut and hickory trees produce nuts?

These trees produce (grow) nuts all summer long - some years' are better than others. Squirrels can start harvesting hickory nuts before they even fall. They chew branchlets off to get the nuts to fall, apparently because they are hungry, and are tired of waiting anymore.

The squirrels will gather the nuts when they fall, and bury them or store them in a hole in a tree. You may find the shells at the base of the trees with the holes (I do).

This year was a great year for nuts, both hickory and black walnut. Also the acorn crop was great which will make the deer fat as well as the turkeys.
