I have the exact truck as you, but mine is a '01. I've never gotten above 16. I speed a little but that is a huge difference...
2002 Dodge HD 3/4T 4X4 with 5.9L gas and 3.55 gearing. Only 1500 miles on this truck, it averages 12 city and highway combined at this point. If it mirrors my 1978 with the same setup, it will eventually get 12 city and 15-16 highway. Sad part is, my 1974 with the 5.2 (we called it a carburated 318 at the time) that had virtually no emissions garbage on it would consistently run 18mpg and provided excellent power. Again, I did not buy this truck for gas mileage as I do not drive it to work (have company pickup) but wanted to plow, tow, haul and ride in safety when performing these tasks.
jwstewar - "99 Chevy Silverado 1500 4WD, ext. cab, short bed, w/ 5.3 liter/4 speed auto, 265/75-R16 tires, and 3.73 gear ratio. Last tank I got 18.75 MPG"
I just bought one just like yours! I'll let you know in a week or 2 what I get for mileage. If I can match what you're getting, I'll be happy!
My 1989 Chevy 2WD, 350 V8, standard cab long bed, 175K miles gets 19+ on the highway, 17-18 while driving to work and back, which is rural. I've never done much "city" driving with it, so I don't know about that.
1999 dodge 2500, 5.9 liter gas with tow package so I assume 3.73 rear, gets me 9mpg around town based on computer. Can get up to 14 on straight highway but around town it really leaves a lot to be desired!!!

Check it by mileage. My friends Cummins Dodge was about 3 mpg off from actual.
My 2002 Ford (gas Triton v8) XLT 4X4 extended cab consistently gets around 20 on the road, and 13 or 14 in city driving, glad I mo ved out to the country. When I moved from from Detroit to
Southern Illinois pulling a 14 foot cargo van trailer, I still got 20 mpg. I have no complaints.
1999 Ford F-250SD extended cap 8' bed 3.73 rear. I get 16 everyday driving/trips/towing tractor. It varies by about .3 mpg up or down but it averages 16. This is for the 57,000 miles I have put on the truck.
