    How much gravel under concrete?

How thick should I put a layer of gravel that I will (someday) pour concrete over? What is the minimum thickness and what is the maximum thickness (if there is one)? It will be at least a year, maybe 2, before the concrete is poured over it.

6" is standard in upstate NY if you are compacting it. If you use a pea gravel you'll need a lot more.

I don't think there is an upper limit as long as the gravel is "contained" and can't get out from under the slab, during and after the pour. More is better but there are diminishing returns. 4 inches is way better than 2 inches but would 4 ft be noticibly better than 2 ft. Probably not.
