Cleaning Chimney Brick....

More kitchen projects.... we have a nice brick chimney going through our kitchen (See the posts on wood floor, now what!)
see attachements
The previous owners had the whole thing covered.
Paneling on one side and tile on the other. It looks like they laid mesh into plaster (or something like that) and then tiled onto that.
I have stripped the mesh. Is there a way to clean all the plaster (or whatever it is ) off of the brick.

The adventure continues!

I had a similar problem and used a brush wheel on my drill to clean it off. It was a complete rehab so the dust just flew. You could try to wet it down and see if that softens it up and keeps the dust down.

Good luck
