I'm hardly an expert but I'd say Hostas are pretty darn hardy. Lift, split and replant but keep 'em watered well during the hot, dry summer months

dig up the whole hosta, take a shovel and just cut the plant into any size pieces you want by just using the shovel. replant the pieces and water until established. Hostas are real hard to kill. great plants.

I've been wondering how this is done! I've seen hostas planted all the way around the base of trees and have been wanting to move one from a flowerbed to do that. So, you just spit it up into chunks and then plant them? Will they then just spread out around the tree? How far apart should I plant the pieces?

I guess that depends on the size of hostas - there are big hostas.....

all you do if just stab the hosta with a shovel and break apart. the size of each piece depends on you and what you what. I wouldn't make the pieces to small because you'll have to wait a long time again for each piece to get to full size. Think of it this way- each piece is a "baby", "seed", "bulb", or whatever you relate to. So each piece will someday become full sized so you can start all over again and split them. Plant each piece as you would like to see the hosta at full size, or plant closer to fill in the spot, then dig up some hostas as they fill in and get crowded. Happy planting.
