OK, it is aluminum and they didn't want the holes too close to the edge so they didn't move away from the corner to make it easy to get a tool in there. Here is a benesug (beneficial suggestion) you can pass on to them. It wouldn't be as pretty but it would be way easier to assemble if the square holes were on the other piece so the nuts could be on the outside and the carriage heads on the inside.
