Red Loctite

Must be my time to ask about Loctite!

I have an application where I have a 1" threaded rod screwed through a piece of steel and into nut welded on the other side. I do not want to be able to unscrew the rod.

I could have the rod welded to the steel, or the nut for that matter, but I was wondering if red Loctite would work as well.

    Would it?

I guess I could also smear JB Weld around the rod where it goes through the steel. I wonder if that'd work?

According to the Loctite web site. Threadlocker 270 is "Intended for parts that do not require disassembly."

Sounds like what you want. But the Technical data sheet says it's a GREEN liquid. The bottle's RED though. http://65.213.72.112/tds5/docs/270.pdf

    Loctite 277 is RED .

Why not just thread it in and drill a hole through both, insert hair pin clip? Or drill hole in nut, then thread the hole and insert a set screw. Either way, it's not "forever".

Good ideas. However, the piece of steel with the nut attached and the threaded rod make up a sub-assembly which gets attached to something else. This will prevent easy access to the nut, so anything done to it will be, for all intents and purposes, permanent.

    Being "forever" is OK.

While I've used the blue Loctite before, I've never used the red stuff. I was wondering just how permanent the red stuff is. I bought a small tube of it on the way home...$7.45.

I just checked out a car board I frequent and it sounds like red Loctite is pretty close to being "permanent". I think it will hold darn well and is unlikely to allow the threads to release, but is probably not as permanent as welding. One guy said that if you heat it it can be made to release (and if not, get ready to cut the bolt out).

Permatex High Strength Threadlocker RED Item Number 27100.

The teeny, tiny instructions on the back of the card indicate once cured it has to be heated to 500F before parts will separate.

Mike, my vote would be for JB Weld. That stuff works on everything!

The auto parts store I stopped at didn't carry Loctite. Permatex threadlocker is similar stuff.
