Thread: Log Skidding

    Re: Log Skidding

I use a square link chain I got from Here It's a grade 100 alloy chain.

    From website:

    G10038SP CHAIN GRADE 100 PEWAG 3/8 SQUARE" 1.46 lbs $4.25 $3.83
Cable Chain & Riggin Chain Grade 100 3/8" Square Link

I'm not sure what all the numbers mean, I just called them to verify and got frustrated with their voice (mis) management system. My guess is the $3.83 is the sale price per foot.

None the less, I got a 25 foot link, slapped a slip hook on one end and a choker on the other end. There is absolutely no concerns in my mind about it grabbing and holding once it's tightened up on a log.

I once even wrapped the chain around the ENTIRE front end of a car to lift the car up and drag it out of the woods. The chain simply tightened & bit right in.

Have also used to help pull full sized industrial backhoe out of mucky situations. (chain around tree & attached to backhoe then pulled)

I decided to get this chain after I snapped my uncles 3/8 chain under similar conditions (of yanking backhoe out of mucky situation).

"so far", this one has shown no signs of flinching.

    Just my .02

Thanks for all the tips. I hope I get a chance to try it out this weekend. It was kind of wet last weekend (at least it wasn't cold though).
