I have hopes of building a bat house this winter.
There are plans and lots of advice on the internet on construction and placement of the houses.

Egon, Good for you. Bats have gotten a bad rap and are unfortunately declining in numbers. Many folks kill them out of ignorance and superstition.
Gary, if you google on "bat" + "house" you'll get plenty of info.
http://dragonet.com/bat/ is a commercial bat hose seller but mentions reasons why there bat houses are used by bats. NO GLUE, NO BURNED IN LOGOS, NO PAINT, SHELLAC, OR VARNISH, AND SO ON.
There are lots of dimensioned plans available and they aren't hard to make. With all the West Nile Virus and other mosquito born disease worries, I can't understand why folks don't do something to help the problem... put out bat houses. A single bat can eat thousands of mosquitos in one night. (I'm not sure how many a married/mated bat eats.
Amazon.com has a great book on bat house builing and locating etc. New $5.74 Bat House Builder's Handbook
by Merlin D. Tuttle (Author), Donna L. Hensley (Author)
Holy cheap book, Bat Man!
