If you're just looking for a dust mask, the Dust-Bee-Gone works well. http://www.dustbeegone.com/other_products.htm
Not for fumes or chemicals, but it does a fine job on dust. Just wash, dry, and reuse.

3M and North make a respirator that blows air in the mask.
This might make up for having your beard mess up a good seal.

Facial hair is a benefit. It can be conformed and shaped so as to filter out all airborn particles. In the winter it protects against cold winds.
