    changing a steering column

How hard is it to change a steering column on a 1989 Chevy full size pickup? Something inside is broken and it's flopping all over. I have to hold up on the wheel to steer it! It's not the tilt, it's loose somewhere between there and the floorboard. If I can find a used one, I think it would be easier to just change it out, since I don't know how much work it will be to take it all apart.

Without looking, I can't tell what exactly is the problem. Get your head under the dashboard and wiggle the column, you may see the problem. That model may have a collapsible column mount, the strap across the column that bolts to the dashboard frame. Completely changing the column shouldn't be very hard, a u-joint for the steering, a linkage for the shifter, and a couple of wire connectors.

Possibly a bearing that the steering shaft rides on??, probably right behind the turn signal switch.
