We've all heard the expression, "Like a bolt from the blue." This refers to a lightning bolt striking from a cloudless clear blue sky. There are well documented cases of people being fried by a lightning bolt with no visible clouds in view. In one case a cyclist was struck from over 5 miles away where there was a thundercloud out of sight behind a mountain. There is an ongoing research project with wide spread sensors that triangulate lightning locations. The data was searched and that is how the bolt that blasted the biker was located.
