replace gas fireplace with woodburning stove

    Hi.

My new to me but very old (1910) house has a gas fireplace inserted into the old fireplace mantle. I would like to remove the gas insert and replace it with either a wood-burning stove or just leave it an open, traditional wood fireplace.

I'm curious how best to accomplish this, and what it might cost. Do I need a gas fitter to come to remove the gas fireplace and it's various pipes and parts? Is it reasonable to insert small wood stove to fit into an old victorian-style fireplace? Will anything need to be done to the chimney?

Any thoughts, insights, advice are much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    LL

We have repaced a propane fireplace with a wood burning insert several years ago. We had the chimney liner and insert installed by certified personnel for insurance reasons. [ I could have done it myself ]

First find out what your local regulations and the insurance companies have to say.

Chances are an insert with a new stainless steel liner will be called for. Installation again depends on regulations.

For pricing you'll have to check out the local market.
