1999,2000,2001,2002 Subaru Foresters

We have a 2000 Subaru Forester that has had the right rear wheel bearing replaced twice at 83,000 and 102,000 miles. The bearing started making noise at 30,000 miles, but I thought it was just drive line whine. (Have owned many Jeeps). I have read about right rear wheel bearing failures at 20,000, 30,000, 40,000, 50,000 miles successively on the same Forester. Each repair cost around $350. Searching on the net revealed that Subaru has known about these bearing failures, yet refuses to compensate their customers unless the vehicle is still under warranty. Subaru's solution was to replace the original ball bearings with Impreza roller bearings. Has anyone here experienced the same bearing failure?

Came close to but did not buy a Forester as after about 5 minutes my leg against the console gets to be too uncomfortable. I sympathize with you however regarding the multiple bearing replacement since I once had a Ford truck (1/2 T) that needed a rear wheel bearing replaced at about every 10,000 miles as regular as clockwork.

Had a car like that once. It turned out to be a rear end that was not straight. Tires wore in a cupped fashion on one side.

There was an interval of time when some of the Ford vehicles had their rear axle housings bent by overzealous cranking on the tie-down chain winches that the auto hauler trucks had. It took some time before that little problem was discovered. Bent rear axle housings are quite common, and some auto repair and frame shops have this little device in the floor that can reveal the bent axle by driving onto it and running the vehicle at very slow speed.
