Shallow Well

    Hello Everyone!

New to the forum. My question is an existing shallow well, 10' to the water line, 30' to bottom of well. The house is approximately 400' from the well and 10' higher in elevation from the well head. Is this a candidate for a submersible pump or a jet pump? Recommendations, advice, help! Pipe size, wire size, etc????

    thank you!

    Ron

This would be a good application for a two-pipe jet pump. Figure twenty feet for a pumping water level; ten feet of elevation to the house so that's thirty; then a pressure head of 110' needed at the house gives you 140' of head; then add the friction loss at say, 5 gallons per minute in 1" pipe and you have another 12' feet of head which takes you to 152' of total pumping head. So, if you figure that the pump needs to recharge the well head tank at twice the useage rate say 10 gallons per minute, take that times the head say 160, divided by 3960 divided by the estimated pump efficiency (70%) and it gives you .58 horsepower. A half-horse jet should do that if it is just going to be a domestic water system, no gardens or fancy fish ponds. Good morning and welcome!

Do you know what the recovery rate of the well is?

In any case you could use a submersible or a jet pump.

If the jet pump is located at the well you may be able to use a shallow well type. If it is located at the house it should be the deep well type with the eductor located in the well. This type will require more piping. A jet pump located at the well head may have to be protected from freezing.

In either case the pump should be sized to the recovery rate and I would be tempted to put a low pressure shutoff on the system so the pump will not run indefinitely if the well runs out of water.

The people who sell you the pump should be able to provide line sizes and and wire sizes.

Please note I have limited knowledge of well systems.

    Re: Shallow Well

Is the shallow well in a pump house?

Is there existing piping from the well?

An electric pump jack will work too but unless we know more about the set up further assumptions are for naught.

If it is a shallow dug well you will need to install well casing and a screen and pea stone and then crushed gravel to seal the bore of the well-but before that you will need to to install a sanitary seal/pitless adapter below the frost line or if there is a pump house you could use a pump jack with well insulated pipe from the surface back underground.

A pump jack can be used to pump water with a pitless adapter as well.
