    Growing rasberries

I planted one Latham Rasberry plant last spring. This summer, I began to get some fruit. I have not done anything to it, such as pruning and need some help on next steps. I do see some new plants coming up as well.

I did not "feed" other than occasional water. Full sun, raised bed, good drainage. I do notice some dead shoots or canes so can I prune this fall? and if so, how? (cut at base? dig down to cut?) I'm a rookie...help!

    Thanks

    Re: Growing rasberries

Raspberries are either summer-bearing or fall-bearing. Summer-bearing raspberries such as Latham will bear fruit on canes that grew the previous year. The canes coming up now will produce fruit next summer, and then will not bear fruit again. The canes that produced this summer will look dead this winter and you should cut them off at ground level.

Raspberries need constant moisture while the berries are forming and ripening. If they dry out too much the berries will be small, hard and seedy. Raspberries also do well with a 4-6" layer of mulch.

    Enjoy.
