I live in the country and we get a lot of black bear traveling through our yard. It's pretty scary! We make sure there is no food left out or garbage anywhere. The bear go from 1 set of woods to another and we are in the middle.

I'd say run for your life! Are you crazy? I wouldn't go outside ever! and I mean ever. Are you not afraid that they might come and eat you up? I know I would be. Have you ever been outside when they walked right through the yard? What did they do?
It's scary but not uncommon in my area. I think the best way to keep them away is to keep food and garbage secure and not to encourage them by leaving food out for them even once. A lady on my street has a lot of bird feeders out front and she even takes them in each and every night.
