It depends on the pet and how much there is to do to take care of the pet. We have always had a cat and a dog. They are the family pets. My daughter knows how to take care of them both and she does a good job. She had fish and hermit crabs when she was younger. They are all dead now!
I got my two older girls a hamster when they were 8 and 10. I still had to help them but they did the majority of it, not that there is much to do. That is a good starter pet, the only thing is they don't live as long as cats and dogs.
