A friend of our family also has a pet rat and attests to their intelligence and ability to train. Of course this makes my oldest boy want one but smart or not, I'm just not sold on that idea.

I have always wanted a pet rat. A white one with red eyes. My parents always told me no also. I agree with the others their isn't a real difference between them and a hamster. My children will have one someday, they are too little yet so we have fish.
