    Possum and Racoon's

I am having a little debate with my partner about the relationship between Possums and Racoon's. I do not think they are that closely related and my partner things they are extremely closely related! So are they?

They are not closely related. Opossum's are marsupial. Probably more closely related to kangaroos.

To expand on what Jim Brown correctly said, marsupials are second most primative group of mammals. Racoons are in the group that includes bears, and are much more evolved, and hugely more intelligent.

Ah, well thank you so much! I knew that I was right about that. So a possum is a marsupial where a raccoon is more evolved and in the same family as bears. What else is in that category?
