    Stubborn Hard Headed Mare

Our daughter purchased a five year old mare at an auction and she has been quite a challenge. She does not yield in anything. If she does, she shows you that she is definitely not doing it willingly. She'll be fair for a couple of days and then she may try to bite or kick you. Anyone ever had an experience like this before? Any recommendations on how to gain her respect?

You are seeing the results of poor training and probably mistreatment. There is no instant cure you just have to continue to work with the horse teaching it that such behavior is not acceptable and praising it when it does good. Young people are normally not not good at this do to lack of patience. The alternate solution is to use the mexican method and beat it half to death a few times. I don't recommend that.

I agree that the only thing you can really do is teach her to trust you and that you won't hurt her. It's sad when horses have been mistreated to that degree. Many of them get over it, but sadly, many never do. Only time will tell.
