    homemade laundry detergent?

I'm considering making my own laundry detergent, for economy sake as well as for an attempt to limit chemical usage. Has anyone done this? What are the pros and cons?

This is a great topic and I can't wait to hear what others say. I have always wanted to be able to make my own. It seems I'm always running out of laundry soap and if I could make my own I wouldn't have to worry about this.

Sometimes I use baking soda and a little bit of dish liquid. It seems to work well and the cloths come out smelling ok. Now if I can figure out how to make dyer sheets.

I found this recipe online. This is what we use at home for our high efficiency washer. It is low sudsing and it works really well. We don't add any fragrance to it at all and it always does very well. I haven't come up with a way to make fabric softener yet but I am experimenting to make some.
