I either use elbow or shell macaroni for my macaroni salad. Really you can use any shape. My salad isn't sweet at all. I use chopped onion, chopped green pepper and either small squares of cheese or grated cheese. I add mayonnaise and salt and it's ready to eat.
You can also add hamburger, chopped tomatos and grated carrots to this if you want something that will serve as your main dish.
I usually use elbow noodles but I have used shells and fusilli. In a recipe passed down from my grandmother, we use tuna, peas, Miracle Whip and chopped onions. It is pretty tasty and definitely not too sweet.
Mine is not sweet either. I use elbow noodles, cucumbers, onion, peppers, hard boiled eggs, salt, and miricle whip. My dad and grandma make it this way also. I love it!
