Need help fixing New Holland 40 D Tractor!

hay so i have a 40 D New Holland and there are a couple of things going on with it that i would like to fix myself if possible. First off there is a problem with the neutral starting switch, It was touchy for a little wile to where i would have to wiggle the range shifter to get it to start and now it just plain wont start... so was wondering if the switch is hard to get to and or any ideas you might have to bypass it. also the 4x4 is not engaging. I have chased the problem back to the transmission. all linkage and shafts are working fine and spinning wile driving... just no 4x4 so again was wondering if there is something i can do to fix this or if there is any known problems with this.
