Recently purchased a 1930's Home Comfort wood cook stove

Would anybody know about how to use the oven. There is a sliding lever on the left side of the stove and I'm not certain if it should be moved to the front or the back of the stove. When I close the draft so the heat can circulate around the oven and then out the flue, the smoke backs up through the stove top. What is wrong? Appreciate any information you can relate.
    Thanks for reading my post.

    Here's an interesting article:

The Art of the Wood Cookstove - Modern Homesteading - MOTHER EARTH NEWS

They discuss the use of the damper on page 3.

If you have a damper in the smoke pipe, you might want to open up the damper a bit. That may stop the smoke from coming up thru the the stove top. Also, make sure you have a good hot fire going before you send the smoke around the oven.

My Mom does nearly all of her cooking on a wood burning kitchen stove. It is a Home Comfort with a warming oven and a side mounted water tank that keeps about 10 gals of water hot. There is nothing better than a fresh apple pie cooked in Mom's oven!

She burns mostly pallet wood in her stove. It keeps Dad busy collecting and cutting up pallets. The wood is dry, pretty clean, and free!
