First time I've ever heard this, but one of my buddies who works on old cars for a living swears that one should not use detergent motor oil in an engine that did not use it when new...like in the 315 Poly V8 in my '57 Dodge truck. He said it attacks the seals and gaskets in those old timers.

Is there any truth to this..? I was counting on modern detergent motor oils and frequent changes to get out the sludge I could not reach without tearing the engine down.
