Re: Big Holes With a Small Auger

I know I'm going to get blasted on this as I usually do here and at TBN, but I'm going on the other side of the fence on this. I've done this on my flag pole. Used my FIL 9" auger and dug 4 holes in a square and left a little section of soil between each hole. I then used the auger down the center area left. I then used my hand post hole diggers to remove the lose dirt left behind. Don't know if it was 100% safe or not, but it got the size hole that I wanted. Just remember take your time and have a 4 good hands on the auger - or the handles.

I'm wondeering if it has something to do with the clay soil. It may be for drainage reasons or to help prevent heaving. Do they recommend that you fill the holes with sand or native clay?
