    Our area has stopped doing perc tests and now does a core sample. A long rod with a tube at the end is drilled into the ground in several different locations and samples are pulled up and examined. Based on soil type and moisture level, the permit will be approved or denied. When they did ours, the only signs anyone had been there, were some small lumps of dirt and several holes about the size of a soup can.

    Until we had our problem, I never realized how may different methods are used to test the soil.
