Then found some marks on an apple tree.

A little farther on there was a wild cherry tree with broken branches.
Just can't figure it out.

If that were true, then I'd say you hadn't lived there very long. Looks like the makin's of a good rug to put in front of the fireplace.
egon; Porcupine?
Trucks are red, Tractors are blue.
egon, Looking again at the rubs on the tree, I don't think porcupine, they scratch/gnaw on the tree I can't tell by the picture of the poop, it,s not clear enough, but a buck will rub against trees, and also take out branches. Are the branches low enough that a deer could have done it? Any tracks around?

Hard to make out the size of the poop, but it looks like you got bar in them thar hills to me.
I agree, that is positivley bear.
Gettin Back To My Country Roots
Oh yeah... Bear... but black or brown? How do you tell? You know how some folks wear bear bells (like sleigh bells) to alert the griz of their presence so they never "surprise" one? Well, look at the bear sign carfully and if there are bear bells in it then it is a brown bear (Griz) otherwise it is probably black bear.

"I'm not from your planet, monkey boy!"
Surely did not notice any little bells in the scat piles but there was an abundance of wild cherry pits.
This is the first year it's stayed around for a while. Most years it just passes through. Think it tore down my bird feeder in early summer. One fellows got a trap set up but nothing. Nobodys seen it. Call it a Phantom scat depositor.
