    Re: Security

As Pat pointed out, you have several factors to weigh and balance here. The passive "chips" require close proximity to read - they get their power from being in the "field" of the reader. These are fairly inexpensive and getting better all the time, but having no power source, are pretty useless for security such as you're asking about. There's some similar 'chips' available now with small batteries (meaning it's a much larger device than a chip) but they have a limited life, making them pretty expensive - and still pretty short range.
The 'lojack' type of system is designed to transmit a signal when activated, and that signal can be tracked. Unfortunately, the frequency for these devices is pretty well known, and any serious car thief can easy detect and disable.
As yet, we're not in the arena of affordable, secure, permanent ID yet ....

Roho, Here is a URL of interest as regards security of items left unattended.

I need some of this "digital water" in aersol form as an anti-intruder marking device as well as a spray-on anti-theft/recovery mechanism.

Those tracking devises dont do much good , when most of the stolen tractors and equipment are headed to Mexico.

More info on RFID tags such as those proposed for stock as ear tags. They are passive and require a reader. There are various "levels" of readers. The bottom level is a hand held reader that has to be right up to the ID. Better (more expensive) ones can read a short distance away (a few, very few, feet.) Expensive ones (many many thousands of dollars) have a range that will permit reading ear tags on groups of animals passing through a gate but still this is not a very large distance.

This system isn't a long range theft recovery system and will not make a suitable substitute for one.
