Sorry CJ, its not a spud rig, but it is basic.
To began a mouse hole about thee feet diameter and four feet deep is dug. Then a 6 to 8 inch casing about six feet long is set in a hand augured hole placed in the center of the mouse hole and set below the top of it.
For the drilling a one inch drill stem was used that had a chisel bit at the bottom. This bottom bit also had a ball and seat. The mouse hole and surface casing would be filled with water. The walking beam went up and down, the drill stem was turned by hand. The chisel bit loosened material that was in turn pumped through the drill stem and discharged into the mouse hole. Debris would settle out and water would overflow back down the hole. Usually clay in the materials would help seal the sides of the hole. Just as in a rotary drill stem was added to the top as the depth increased.
When a water seam was entered the mouse hole would start to overflow. [img]/forums/images/icons/grin.gif[/img]
My drawing is not the best quality and pipe is depicted using only a line. The symbols for fittings have long since been forgotten.

In the movie "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" they showed them drilling a well. They didn't show much except a fellow sitting there turning a pipe as it went up and down. Might have been similar.

That method is called balling or jetting. The ball in the bottom of the drill pipe would keep the pipe full on the up stroke and let more material in on the down stroke. The biggest problem with this method was when you stopped the walking beam. All the material in the drill pipe would settle, locking the ball into it's seat. Now all had to be pulled and emptied.
We used a 55 gallon bucket cut in half, the two inch pipe came up out of the ground with a 3" tee on top. The side of the tee was where the water came out of the casing and into the bucket, the water was forced down the 1" pipe with a centrifugal pump and circulated that way. No ball in the chisel bit.

Can't ever recall hearing the of drill stem plugging up. It would be stationary every time a new joint was added. [img]/forums/images/icons/grin.gif[/img]

Here's a rig that was used just last year to pound my well at my new place - and the water report just came is as ALL OK! Ya-hoo, ain't old technology wonderful?
