There is a tree in my neighbor's yard that the leaves are already turning red. It has been really hot here this summer and I don't know if that is why or not. Any ideas?

Ours too and I would say it's about time. It's getting chillier at night so they are changing or so that is what my gramps used to say. They are already starting to fall too, which means raking soon! Oh joy. I hate raking but the kids love jumping in the piles of leaves.
If the leaves are already turning that means that the chlorophyll production has slowed or stopped. Some trees to do this before others. Still there could be other reasons for it.
Our cherry tree started dropping leaves a few weeks ago. It's usually almost bare before most of the other trees start to change.
Some trees are more dependent on sun than others. When they days start to get shorter trees like Cherry Trees are going to lose their leaves well before some others like Oaks.
