Thread: Amish

I live in Amish country. I don't know much about their beliefs, except that they use horse and buggies and don't have electricity. They sometimes sell baked goods outside one of the small country groceries. I've noticed that when we pass their buggies, the men always wave, but the women don't.

There was a young Amish mother this spring who's horse ran away with the carriage while she and her two young sons were in it. They crashed through a fence and went down a 30 foot embankment. The two boys were hurt but OK. It killed the mother. She was 7 months pregnant at the time. Even though I wasn't Amish, I have grieved over the loss of such a young mother and her child.

We also have an Amish community close to where we live. These people are amazing - ok I don't know if it's the people or the closeness of the community. I know I could not live that way, now if I was raised that way it might be different.
