Does anyone here make dolls? I want to learn to make really simple stuffed dolls for my daughter. Any tips for a barely-crafty beginning sewer?

I have never attempted to make a doll, but I have received a few homemade dolls from friends over the years, and they are so amazing. Some are more simplistic, but others are really neat.
Yes, they can be really cool. In my case, I'm definitely looking for simplistic! I want to make one that can stand up to a toddler's tough love.
A friend of mine makes good use of plastic wrappers to make the stuffings of a doll. She cuts the plastic wrappers into tiny pieces and inserts them into a doll that she had sewn herself. It saves her money in buying cotton or cloth for the doll stuffings.
That's a really smart idea! Not only is it frugal, it's environmentally friendly. Once I find a pattern I think I can handle, I think I will use plastic too.
